Kilgore, Texas (KETK) - The Next Step Community Solutions organization that works to prevent the abuse of drugs, prescription medications, alcohol and synthetic marijuana is doing a Synthetic Awareness event at Kilgore Middle School May 28st and 29nd.

The guest speaker is Emily, a normal girl who smoked synthetic marijuana over the course of a couple of weeks.

Now, she has partnered with the non-profit organization to share her story and raise awareness following adverse effects of her use of the man-made substance.

The Coalition Coordinator, Rebecca Smith, said Emily’s story is compelling and that is why they partnered with her to get her message out there. “They thought she was going to pass away. They decided to pull life support but she did pull through but unfortunately she was left paralyzed and blind and she will still be in a wheel chair and is still working on that recovery. It is a drug with really devastating effects.”

The event is open to the public Thursday evening May 28th at 6 p.m. at Kilgore Middle School. Friday during the day, two assemblies will be held for the middle and high school in Kilgore.
