REGULAR BOARD MEETING MAY 17 , 2007
The Board of Trustees of the Overton Independent School District met for a Regular Board Meeting on Thursday, May 17. The following items of business were transacted:
- Morris Hawkins, the mother of Jeffie Wilson, spoke in open forum asking the Board to consider changing the policy that prohibits students who have not passed the TAKS test from participating in graduation ceremonies. The Board decided to hold a special meeting on Monday, May 21 at 6:00 to consider the request.
- The minutes of the previous meetings were approved.
- The agenda for the meeting was certified
- The bills paid in April, 2007 were reviewed
- Mrs. Maines presented the elementary principal’s report and Dr. Stretcher gave the secondary principal’s report.
- The results of the May 12, 2007 School Board election were canvassed and approved.
- Kelvin Darden and Jerry Luster were given the oath of office and were installed as trustees.
- School Board officers were elected with the following offices: Todd Meadows; President: Scotty Moore; Vice President: Pam Raney; Secretary: David Gravley; Assistant Secretary
- Dr. Stretcher reported that the Site based Decision Making Committee met on May 15. At the meeting Maintenance Director Roy Burns gave an update on the building maintenance program and the Dress Code was reviewed.
- The First State Bank of Overton was awarded the bid to be the depository for the school for the next two years.
- Richard Loughlin was selected to conduct the school audit for the 2006-2007 school year.
- The Board approved a motion to accept a donation of $500,000 for the construction of the new ag building.
- Johnny Craig from WRL construction gave an update on the new building project. Projections are that the building will be complete just prior to the start of school.
- Jason Johnson, district technology coordinator, made a presentation to the Board about the progress that has been made in the area of technology over the last two years.
- The Board approved the dress code for the 2007-2008 school year. The dress code will be the same except for an addition that states shirts are too long if when a student sits down they are sitting on their shirt and language was included to allow students to wear shorts to extracurricular activities even during the time they are prohibited at school.
- Resignations were accepted from Elaine Gilbert, Ray Thompson and Sarah Maines.
One year probationary contracts were extended to Holly Curry to teach secondary science, Donna Vidachovich to teach High School Special Education and Jason Johnson to serve as District Technology Coordinator.
